Pilgrimage Overview
Join SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church on a Pilgrimage to the Shrines of Spain & Lourdes!
DAY 1
Depart USA
Today we board our flights to Lourdes with beverages and snacks served aloft.
DAY 2
Arrive Lourdes
Upon arrival at the airport and after going through customs, we are greeted by our Tour Representative at the baggage claim. We are then transferred to our hotel in Lourdes. Time permitting, in the evening, we join the candlelight processional.
DAY 3
Lourdes
This day we start with Mass at the Grotto of Massabielle, where Our Lady appeared to Bernadette in 1858. Later, we take our official group photo in front of the Basilica, followed by our guided tour of Lourdes, which will include the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Basilica of St. Pius X, the world’s largest underground church, and the Baths, where thousands of miraculous cures have taken place, making it the most respected shrine and sanctuary in France. Also to be visited are sites associated with the life of Saint Bernadette, like the Boly Mill – where she was born; the Locale Mill – residence of her parents; the Cachot -formerly used as a jail where she lived at the time of the Apparitions; the Chapel – where she received her first Holy Communion; and the Parish Church -containing the baptismal font where she was baptized. We will then have some free time before returning to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
DAY 4
Zaragoza
This morning we depart Lourdes and transfer to Zaragoza. On arrival, we tour the city, which was founded by the Romans. We break for lunch on our own before continuing our tour. This city was also the birthplace of Goya, whose works grace many of the sites we visit. The Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar commemorates the oldest apparitions of Our Lady recorded to St. James the Apostle in the year 40 AD. If possible, we celebrate Mass there. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
DAY 5
Montserrat
This morning we leave Zaragoza and transfer to Montserrat, home to the Benedictine monastery dramatically set in the Montserrat mountain range. Pilgrims from around the world flock to this monastery to view its magnificent architecture in such a striking setting. This shrine has attracted pilgrims for over 700 years, much as it did Ignatius of Loyola in March of 1522. We pause here to visit the Black Madonna of Montserrat, probably Spain’s most fervent devotion to the Blessed Mother. We continue to Barcelona for dinner and overnight.
DAY 6
Barcelona
This morning we visit the most famous Holy Family church, La Sagrada Familia. La Sagrada Familia is an unfinished Catholic Basilica in Barcelona designed by the celebrated Art Nouveau architect Antoni GaudL We enjoy a full guided tour of the Basilica before we celebrate Mass. We will then continue to Park Guell before we return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
DAY 7
Valencia
Today, say goodbye to Barcelona! On your way to Valencia, stop in Penrscola, where we will visit the beautiful Penrscola Castle. This iconic medieval castle, also known as the Castle of Papa Luna, sits dramatically on a rocky promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Explore its impressive fortifications, towers, and courtyards, and enjoy stunning views of the coastline. We then continue to Valencia, a treasure trove of Roman and Arabic architecture, surrounded by citrus groves.
DAY 8
Valencia
Today, we tour the city of Valencia. Visit the Cathedral, mainly of early Gothic style. Its three portals are Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque. The octagonal bell tower is the landmark of the city. From there, you have a splendid view over all of Valencia. In the Capitulary, you can see the Holy Chalice, of which Jesus and the Apostles are said to have drunk during the Last Supper. Afterwards, we transfer to the Silk Exchange, where we will take a guided tour. The Silk Exchange (La Lonja de la Seda) in Valencia is a magnificent example of Gothic civil architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 15th century, it served as a bustling marketplace for silk trading, showcasing intricate stone carvings, ornate columns, and a stunning main hall that reflects the city’s prosperous past as a major center of the silk trade.
DAY 9
Seville
Today we depart Valencia and transfer to Seville. Upon arrival, we will have some time to check into our hotel and rest before our evening activities. In the evening, we will attend a Flamenco show.
DAY 10
Seville
Today we will listen to our guide’s account of the city’s role in Roman times, its conquest by the Moors in 712 A.D., and its contribution to the discovery of the New World. We will visit the Seville Alcazar, or the Royal Palace of Seville. We also visit the Cathedral with Columbus’ tomb – the world’s largest Gothic edifice. We then transfer to the Plaza de Espana, where we will have free time to explore and visit Parque de Marra Luisa. Finally, stroll through the narrow lanes of the charming Santa Cruz Quarter.
DAY 11
Madrid
Following breakfast, we leave for the Imperial City of Toledo, where Saint John of the Cross was imprisoned by the Inquisition in a monastery just below the Muslim Alcazar and later nursed back to health by St. Teresa. Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is picturesquely perched on a rocky mound, isolated on three sides by a looping gorge of the Rro Tajo. Known as the City of the Three Religions, it is a maze of cobblestone streets winding among churches, synagogues, mosques, houses, and buildings preserved from its rich history. For many centuries, Christians, Moors, and Jews lived here together in relative equality and peace. The city, surrounded by walls, hides great treasures such as its impressive Cathedral, the Santa Marra La Blanca Synagogue (which also served as a Catholic church), the superb Church of San Juan de los Reyes, and the Church of Santo Tome, with its famous El Greco masterpiece, where we will celebrate Mass. Following Mass, we will be able to sample the famous local pastry, marzipan, created by the Catholic Sisters here. We then transfer to our hotel in Madrid in the Gran Via.
DAY 12
Madrid
This morning is at leisure to explore Madrid on our own or for last-minute shopping. Your hotel will be central to and in the Gran Via vicinity.
DAY 13
