Pilgrimage Overview
Join Fr. Michael Hendrickson on a Jubilee Pilgrimage to Rome & Barcelona!
DAY 1
Depart USA
Today we board our overnight flights to Rome with snacks and beverages served aloft.
DAY 2
Arrive Rome
Welcome to Rome, also known as “The Eternal City.” Upon arrival at Rome airport, we collect our luggage in the baggage claim area, and are greeted by our Travel Representative. Make our way to the bus and transfer the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. Here we will visit our first Major Basilica and visit the First Holy Door of our Jubilee Year Pilgrimage. We will have Mass here and tour the Basilica before transferring to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
DAY 3
Rome
This morning we attend the Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square or at the Audience Hall. The Audience is celebrated each Wednesday by His Holiness, Pope Francis (pending the papal schedule). Next we go to the Trevi Fountain area for some free time and lunch (on our own). After lunch, we visit the oldest of the four major Basilicas in Rome, the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, the cathedral church, the seat of the Bishop of Rome. Just across the street, we visit the very steps that led up to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem, the steps Jesus climbed on His way to trial during His Passion. We will celebrate Holy Mass at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, dedicated to Our Blessed Mother. Dinner and overnight.
DAY 4
Vatican City
Today we tour the Vatican Museum, where we see the Tapestry Gallery, Raphael Rooms, and Sistine Chapel. Next, we visit St. Peter’s Basilica, built on the site where St. Peter the Apostle was martyred. Here, we have the opportunity to view Michelangelo’s Pieta sculpture and pray at the tombs of Pope Benedict XVI and Popes St. John XXIII and St. John Paul II. After lunch, continue to Assisi where we will have our dinner and overnight.
DAY 5
Assisi
This morning we take a tour of the Basilica of St. Francis, where we see the tomb of St. Francis and a series of frescoes depicting his life, along with a few of the saint’s possessions. Next, we visit the Santuario Della Spogliazione and Blessed Carlo Acutis’ tomb. He is the first millennial to be declared Blessed. Continue the tour by walking through this picturesque town, where St. Francis and St. Clare both followed God’s call to rebuild His church. Enjoy some free time – for additional prayer, shopping, and lunch. After lunch, board the bus, which will take us outside of the walls of Assisi to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. This Basilica is made up of two structures, both of which we will visit. The first structure is the “Porziuncola” and the second is the “Capella del Transito” which is the place where St. Francis died. Return to the hotel for dinner and a restful overnight.
DAY 6
Return to Rome
We begin our day in Assisi, the hometown of St. Francis and St. Clare. After breakfast, we check out and continue to the nearby town of Bolsena. Here, we visit the Cathedral housing the corporeal of the Miracle of the Eucharist, which took place in 1262. Celebrate Mass in this historic location before heading to Orvieto. In Orvieto, we marvel at one of the most beautiful and renowned Cathedrals in Italy. This incredible town sits on a volcanic high rock formation and has a Christian history that officially began in 1004. However, the town was built over preexisting Etruscan-era cave tunnels dating back 2,500 years. Some historians believe the cave-tunnels were used by Christians to celebrate Mass when Christianity was forbidden. After exploring Orvieto, ride through the beautiful Umbrian mountains toward Rome. Upon arrival in Rome, check in for dinner and overnight. Retire for a restful night’s sleep.
DAY 7
Flight To Barcelona
Today we board our flight to Barcelona. Upon arrival we transfer to Las Ramblas for free time before we go to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
DAY 8
Barcelona
This morning we will visit the most famous Holy Family church, La Sagrada Familia. La Sagrada Familia is an unfinished Catholic Basilica in Barcelona designed by the celebrated Art Nouveau architect Antoni Gaudi. We enjoy a full guided tour of the Basilica before we celebrate Mass. We then continue to Park Guell before we return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
DAY 9
Manresa & Montserrat
Today we make our way to the spiritual heart of the Catalonia region. We visit Manresa, a place of profound conversion for Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Here, in a cave on the banks of the Cardoner River, Ignatius received a vision that provided him with deep insights into spiritual life and altered the course of his own life. From the initial insights he received here, Ignatius went on to pen the Spiritual Exercises.” We enjoy an audiovisual presentation and tour of the museum at Manresa then celebrate Mass in the nearby cave. We enjoy lunch together at a local restaurant. Afterwards we continue to Montserrat, home to the Benedictine monastery dramatically set in the Montserrat mountain range. Pilgrims from around the world flock to this monastery to view its magnificent architecture in such a striking setting. This shrine has attracted pilgrims for over 700 years, much as it did Ignatius of Loyola in March of 1522. We pause here to visit the Black Madonna of Montserrat, probably Spain’s most widely practiced devotion to the Blessed Mother.
DAY 10
Barcelona
Spend a relaxing day in Barcelona starting with the charming streets and shops of the Gothic Quarter. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at Poble Espanyol, and then spend the afternoon shopping along Las Ramblas and Passeig de Gràcia, ending with a serene evening at the Barcelona Cathedral.
